The Story

Nestled in the heart of Proserpine, the Prince of Wales Hotel stands as a living testament to the region’s captivating history, which began in the late 19th century when European pastoralists settled in the Proserpine district. Glen Isla, a sprawling property, was allocated for a 3000-acre sugar plantation in 1882. The ambitious venture, known as the Crystal Brook Sugar Company Limited, was fueled by the toil of Pacific Islander and Chinese laborers, yet it faced challenges and did not flourish as anticipated.

In the wake of these trials, the land was subdivided under the Crown Lands Act of 1884, promoting smaller selections and hastening the growth of the Proserpine township in the 1890s. The pivotal moment came in 1897 with the establishment of the Proserpine Central Sugar Mill, a catalyst for the township’s development. The mill not only drew in workers but also encouraged the establishment of several hotels to accommodate the growing population.

Amidst this period of growth, the Prince of Wales Hotel emerged in 1904, a vision realized by T. Heron and C Cheffins for Mrs. Elisabeth Simpson. The hotel quickly became a cornerstone of the community, offering accommodations and stabling services. Throughout the early 20th century, the hotel experienced a succession of approximately 14 different licensees, marking its dynamic journey.

In 1954, the hotel underwent significant renovations and expansions, showcasing influences of the Art Deco and Modernist movements. The additions, designed by Cyril Christian Ruwald of Sydney, infused a sleek, contemporary aesthetic into the hotel’s façade. This era of transformation, while enhancing the building’s structure, retained its essence of permanence.

Today, with new ownership at the helm, the Prince of Wales Hotel continues to honor its rich history, seamlessly blending the elegance of the past with the conveniences of the present. The echoes of Proserpine’s history resonate within these walls, inviting guests to partake in an extraordinary journey through time and hospitality. Experience the legacy, warmth, and timeless charm of the Prince of Wales Hotel, where the past meets the present, and the future awaits.

“I don’t know what change the PoW has gone through since the last time I’ve eaten there, but WOW! The food we ate was to die for, I was expecting to maybe order a pizza..or a parmi but the menu was so unique and different to any pub, I LOVED the Korean and Japanese influence thats been brought in and the experience i had was different to any pub bistro I’ve been to in a very very long time. I will definitely eat here again, mostly because I really want to try every item on the menu!”
